At the White House press briefing Wednesday, Jake Tapper asked press secretary Jay Carney why the Obama Administration champions aggressive journalism abroad, but not here in the U.S.
Referring to the recent deaths of journalists in Syria, Tapper said, “The White House keeps praising these journalists … How does that square with the fact that this administration has been so aggressively trying to stop aggressive journalism in the United States by using the Espionage Act to take whistleblowers to court?”
Carney, a former journalist himself who is married to Tapper’s ABC colleague Claire Shipman, answered: “As somebody who knew both Anthony [Shadid] and Marie [Colvin] I particularly appreciate what they did to bring that story to the American people. As for other cases … divulging that kind of information is a serious issue.” Watch:
