It’s Official: Katie Couric to Leave “CBS Evening News”

By Alex Weprin

“CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric has confirmed that she will be leaving the program in the coming weeks.

Couric told People magazine:

“I have decided to step down from the CBS Evening News. I’m really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we’ve been able to do in the past five years in addition to the reporting I’ve done for 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning. In making the decision to move on, I know the Evening News will be in great hands, but I am excited about the future.”

A CBS News spokesperson adds, “There’s a lot to be proud of during Katie Couric’s time at Evening News. CBS News, like Katie herself, is looking forward to the next chapter.”

Couric is being vague about her next steps, which will most likely involve a syndicated talk show, telling People that she wants to “engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling.”

As we noted earlier, ABC is in the running for the talker, with CBS and NBC also showing interest. Any deal would also likely include a presence on the network’s news programs.

“60 Minutes” correspondent Scott Pelley is expected to replace Couric at the CBS newscast.
