Is ESPN Quitting 3D?

By Noah Davis

ESPN might be coming to your Xbox, but it’s days of 3D could be numbered.

Dashiell Bennett writes that the Worldwide Leader is considering abandoning the 3D channel it launched in June if the company can’t find a sustainable business model. Which, of course, is ludicrous. 3D will succeed. But it’s going to take some time.

We bet that the majority of sports fans purchased a new, enormous, flat-screen television in the past two years. Expecting them to dish out another $1,500 for a 3D set isn’t realistic. It’s just not going to happen, especially when the offerings are so slim. But they will, eventually. The next set everyone buys will be 3D-enabled.

Someone is going to make a mint broadcasting 3D sports, but the money won’t start flowing for another couple years. ESPN would be foolish to get out of the business before it even began.
