Ohio Governor and former Republican presidential candidate John Kasich spoke at the Radio & Television Correspondents’ Association dinner last night, and somewhat sarcastically referred to the event as the “ABC Awards.”
Why? The Alphabet’s news division received three of the four honors awarded by the RTCA earlier in the evening.
Jonathan Karl, (at right in photo, above) ABC News’ Chief White House Correspondent, received the Joan S. Barone Award, which recognizes excellence in D.C.-based political reporting. Karl has reported on high-profile news stories recently, from Hillary Clinton’s marathon testimony before the Benghazi Committee to the resignation of Speaker John Boehner.
ABC News’ Senior Operations Producer Peter Doherty (at left in photo) received the Jerry Thompson Award, which recognizes an extraordinary career in production. Doherty’s contributions to the division were varied, encompassing everything from how countless remote locations across Washington D.C. are wired, to spearheading the move to HD in ABC News’ D.C. bureau.
The RTCA recognized Dennis Dunlavey (at center) with their Career Achievement Award. Dunlavey worked at ABC News for 40 years as a reporter, writer, producer, editor.
The fourth honor is the David Bloom Award, which recognizes excellence in investigative reporting. This one went to BBC’s International Correspondent Ian Pannell and cameraman Darren Conway, in recognition of their reporting from Colombia in 2015 where they covered the government’s fight against drug-trafficking.
Comedy Central’s The Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj provided the entertainment, giving the audience a mix of hard-hitting jokes with serious commentary.
