The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that effectively would end government funding of National Public Radio. The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate, where it has effectively no chance of passing.
The votes were strictly along party lines, with all Democrats opposing the measure, along with all but seven Republicans.
The bill does not affect funds for PBS.
The passage comes a week after NPR CEO Vivian Schiller resigned from the organization, following the release of an undercover video that appeared to show an NPR fund-raising employee saying some unfortunate things about the Tea Party, and questioning NPR’s need for government funding.
That initial report has come under scrutiny from The Blaze, the website founded by Fox News host Glenn Beck.
