HLN: “The Op-Ed Page of a Newspaper”

David Ho writes in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the strong ratings, and strong personalities, on Headline News during prime time.

He writes about the network’s continuous ratings growth since its programming shake-up three years ago, focusing more on opinion.

CNN Worldwide EVP, Ken Jautz, who runs HLN, puts the success of the network on how it differentiates itself from both the CNN mothership and the rest of cable news.

“We liken them to the op-ed page of a newspaper,” Jautz says in the article. “Glenn Beck is not a journalist. He is a talk show host. We emphasize that Nancy Grace is an ex-prosecutor. I think it’s very important to be clear with the audience.”

The article did note that, although HLN shows have continued to see growth, Grace saw the smallest year-to-year growth of any 8pmET show. Beck’s audience at 9pmET, however, saw the most growth.

> Update: An emailer writes, “Nancy Grace had her highest rating ever on the night before Super Tuesday.”
