What situation brings Today show anchor Matt Lauer together with Justin Timberlake and Tony Romo for six hours? Golf.

More specifically, playing a round at Torrey Pines, the site of this week’s U.S. Open.

The celeb trio were paired with an essay contest winner from Golf Digest, John Atkinson, to prove wrong Tiger Woods’ statement after last year’s event: that no 10-handicapper could break 100 on an Open layout.

The celebrities held their own. Lauer shot 100 exactly, while Timberlake finished with 98 and Romo, a 2.2-handicapper, shot 84. Atkinson finished with 114.

The event will be edited to a one-hour broadcast as a lead-in to Sunday’s final round coverage of the U.S. Open on NBC.
