Hawk Harrelson Forgets He Does Play-by-Play

By Alex Weprin

Chicago White Sox play-by-play man Hawk Harrelson has one very simple job to do: give a play-by-play description of what is happening on the field, while bantering with his booth-mate Steve Stone. Last night, when Minnesota Twins DH Jim Thome hit a game winning walk-off home run against the Sox, Harrelson was unable to do his job.

Thome hit the ball, and the booth went silent. For over a minute. The only worlds out of Harrelson’s mouth were “and we will be back,” when he threw to commercial.

Maybe GQ was on to something when they named Harrelson and Stone Major League Baseball’s “Worst Broadcast Booth.”

Video of the call (or lack thereof) is after the jump.

Update: YouTube has pulled the clip, but you can see the Twins announcers calling Thome’s shot here.
