Has CNN Found Its ‘Lockup?’

By Chris Ariens

cnnlogoAs CNN looks to create more documentary-style programming, the network has announced it is teaming up with documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney and actor/director Robert Redford for “Death Row Stories.”

Each episode of the eight-part series will tell the story of a different capital murder case. CNN says the stories include “twists and turns worthy of a crime thriller.” The series, which debuts in March, will be narrated by actress Susan Sarandon.

“The series provides stark examples of the struggle between the powerful and the powerless,” says Gibney. “The stakes – life or death – couldn’t be higher.”

“We are thrilled to collaborate with this award-winning team of filmmakers on such a powerful and thought-provoking series,” says CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker.

This is the second partnership between CNN and Redford’s Sundance Productions. CNN is also in partnership with Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions on a movie for CNN Films.
