Google Marks Walter Cronkite’s 100th Birthday

In a tribute to iconic CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite, Google’s animated “doodle” for Friday mark’s Cronkite’s 100th birthday with a look at some of his best-remembered moments on TV.

In the animation, Cronkite makes his debut as anchor of the CBS Evening News in 1962; takes off his glasses as his tells America President John F. Kennedy has died; and the moment in 1969 when a clearly thrilled Cronkite covered Apollo 11’s landing on the moon.

The final moment in the animation features Cronkite’s final sign off, saying “and that’s the way it is” for the last time in 1981, telling viewers he would be away and “Dan Rather will be sitting in here for the next few years.”

Cronkite died in 2009 at 92.
