Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze Goes Traditional, Becomes Cable and Satellite Channel

By Alex Weprin

TheBlaze, the web-TV network from former Fox News host Glenn Beck, is becoming a more traditional cable and satellite channel and launching on DISH Network. TheBlaze will still be available to buy a la carte online, but now some DISH Network households will have access to it as well. Those DISH customers who subscribe to lower tiers can add TheBlaze for $5 a month.

“TheBlaze has helped revolutionize television over the Internet and now we are excited to bring the revolution back to traditional television,” Beck said in a statement. “TheBlaze will be home to news, information and entertainment programming with the facts and stories people care about most and we look forward to kicking things off with DISH.”

While TheBlaze will still be available online only, the move underscores the power of television. Old habits die hard, and the traditional subscription model, whereby a channel is bundled with hundreds of others, still has power. While it is still very early in the game, the move should also be a disconcerting one to some Fox News hosts like Sean Hannity, who have largely not had any conservative talk competition on television.
