While rival network MSNBC takes to News Corp.-owned MySpace for a convention contest, Fox News is going elsewhere to connect with viewers through social networking.
FNC’s 20,000+ “fans” can make use of discussion boards, a wall to leave comments, polls, photos and other tools. There are Facebook exclusive videos, including a behind-the-scenes Shepard Smith video currently featured (there’s also a Fox News Blast video on the sidebar entitled “Trouser Snake”).
SVP of development Joel Cheatwood tells the Times the Facebook choice was made because the site is, “currently the leading social network.”
Also on the younger demo front, Forbes examines the partnership between FNC and Palestra.net. Calling it, “the latest — and boldest — move by a major media company to capitalize on America’s some 6.1 million undergrads,” Forbes describes how the partnership has continued to grow.
“Palestra viewers are growing quickly, with over two million people seeing it between Fox’s various channels and online distribution,” writes James Erik Abels.
