Fox News, MSNBC Hit Lows in Total Day Demo

fox news logoFox News averaged 174,000 A25-54 viewers in total day for the week of May 12, the lowest-rated week in the total day demo since the holiday week of December 24, 2012. Before that, the network’s lowest week in the total day demo was the week of September 3, 2001, before Fox News took over as the top-rated cable news network.

MSNBC also struggled last week, tying for its fifth-lowest week ever in the total day demo. In fact, three cable news networks were down double digits for the week compared to their respective year-to-date averages: Fox News is down -14% in total viewers and -19% in the demo, MSNBC is down -15% and -19%, and CNN is down -20% and -21%.

Despite the low, Fox News still led its competitors for the week: in total day, MSNBC was second with 105,000 A25-54 viewers and CNN was third with 97,000 A25-54 viewers. Fox News also led the way in total viewers, as we noted in yesterday’s Cable Network Ranker post, averaging 909,000 viewers to MSNBC’s 372,000 and CNN’s 313,000.
