Focus on Florida as Category 5 Irma Barrels Across Atlantic

By Chris Ariens

The three network morning shows pivoted away from Harvey, and put the focus Irma as the lead of their newscasts this morning as the category 5 hurricane heads toward the Leeward Islands, with Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and, possibly, Florida in its sights.

Florida’s governor declared a state of emergency Monday as the storm is expected to begin affecting the state later this week. As of the 8 a.m. hurricane center report, Irma is a catastrophic category 5 storm. Storm force winds will begin to be felt in Puerto Rico as early as tonight.

For those not already based there, network news correspondents will begin making their way to Florida to cover Irma’s approach.
