As the last debate moderator in of the campaign—and the first Fox News Channel journalist ever chosen to moderate a general election debate in the network’s 20-year history, Chris Wallace had plenty of pressure as he took the stage in Las Vegas. A look at journalists’ reactions during the debate—and reviewers’ stories Thursday morning, Wallace did his network proud.
“Mr. Wallace mixed humor with scolding and persistence with patience to guide his charges toward the most substantive encounter of an unusually vicious election,” wrote Michael Grynbaum in The New York Times.
And from CNN‘s Dylan Byers: “In an otherwise nasty and vitriolic campaign season, the Fox News Sunday host pressed Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump on matters pertaining to the U.S. economy, America’s foreign policy and the Supreme Court, while also addressing pressing questions about both candidates’ fitness to lead.”
On Twitter, CNN’s Jake Tapper said Wallace gave a “sterling performance,” while Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch said “tonight was a great night for Chris Wallace. He was outstanding — and I bet some new people will tune into Fox News Sunday.”
