FNC Health Contributor Battling Cancer

Fox News Channel health contributor Dr. Cynara Coomer was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer, just a few weeks after giving birth to her daughter, Olivia. Coomer, ironically, is a cancer surgeon herself, specializing in breast cancer at Staten Island University Hospital.

After discovering a lump on her thyroid gland, she went in and received an ultrasound, followed by a biopsy. The result of those tests was the papillary carcinoma diagnosis.

So, what’s next? Treatment. As soon as my doctor said the words every patient dreads, “its cancer,” my husband and I sprang into action. I knew I’d need surgery to remove the thyroid, and because of where it’s located, it is a very delicate procedure.

If done incorrectly – the patient’s voice could be damaged. At least my operating hands aren’t in danger – but I could kiss my TV journalism career goodbye if that were to happen.

The surgery was a success, though Dr. Coomer still has to undergo radiation treatments to destroy any remaining cancerous tissue. She is expected to make a full recovery.
