Experian Hitwise: Web Surfers Reach for Their Morning Joe

By David Cohen

MSNBC’s Morning Joe brewed its way onto the Experian Hitwise list of the top three cable-news-show websites, claiming second place for the week ending May 7, trailing first-place Fox News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor and overtaking MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, which came in at No. 3. Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, which placed third the previous week, slipped off the chart.

The top two late-night talk-show sites were unchanged for the third consecutive week — Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report — and NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon replaced network sibling The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in third place.

The morning-news-show rankings remained steady: NBC’s Today, ABC’s Good Morning America, and CBS’ The Early Show.

CBS, Fox, and ABC were the top three broadcast-network websites for the fourth consecutive week, and the same applied to the top two broadcast-network show sites, Fox’s American Idol and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. CBS’ Survivor bumped network sibling NCIS out of third place. The only new entry to the top 25 was ABC’s Brothers and Sisters (to No. 8 from No. 27).

The top three adults-only cable-show sites were the same as last week, except that The Daily Show slipped past MTV’s 16 & Pregnant, seizing second place and dropping the latter to third. Comedy’s South Park led the way. The only new entry to the top 25 was Morning Joe (10 from 35).

When combining broadcast and cable shows, the top three held steady from the week ending April 30: American Idol, Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, and South Park. New top 25 members were CBS’ CSI: Miami (18 from 30), and Brothers and Sisters (19 from 78).
