Experian Hitwise: The Last Word Edges On the Record

By David Cohen

The tug-of-war between MSNBC’s The Last Word and Fox News Channel’s On the Record with Greta Van Susteren for third-place on the Experian Hitwise chart of the top three cable-news-show websites continued, with The Last Word seizing the No. 3 spot for the week ending June 11 after conceding it to On the Record the previous week. The top two once again were Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor, and MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, respectively.

Two Comedy Central offerings — The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report — claimed the top two spots on the late-night talk-show website chart for the fourth week in a row, while TBS’ Conan bumped NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon out of third place.

The morning news shows were unchanged, as usual: NBC’s Today, ABC’s Good Morning America, and CBS’ The Early Show.

CBS and ABC remained atop the list of broadcast-network websites, but NBC snatched the No. 3 spot from Fox. Fox’s American Idol held onto first place on the chart of broadcast-show sites, but second and third went to two newcomers: NBC’s The Voice, and ABC’s The Bachelorette, respectively. Climbers in the top 25 were Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (to No. 8 from No. 18), and NBC’s Friday Night Lights (17 from 26).

The top three adults-only cable shows were unchanged from the week ending June 4: Comedy’s South Park, followed by MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and 16 & Pregnant. Joining the top 25 were ABC Family’s Switched at Birth (13 from 51), VH1’s Single Ladies (16 from 28), and USA Network’s Covert Affairs (24 from 49).

When combining broadcast and cable offerings, the top two show sites remained unchanged — Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and South Park — while American Idol claimed third place, bumping Telemundo’s La Reina del Sur off the chart. Movers in the top 25 were The Voice (8 from 21), and MTV’s Teen Wolf (20 from 40).
