NBC News Middle East correspondent and Beirut bureau chief Richard Engel was named the 2007 winner of the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism. Engel won for his MSNBC documentary, “War Zone Diary,” a one-hour special compiled from Engel’s video diary.

Engel snuck into Iraq in 2003 as a freelance reporter, and videoed his observations and Iraqi and American reactions in the country. The special includes filming Engel has done during four years of his time in the Iraq.

This is the first time the award has been given to a broadcast journalist.
