Election 2010: CBS News Going to All Platforms for Midterm Election Coverage, Partners with Google

For its midterm election coverage, CBS News is planning a major multi-platform push, including extensive live coverage online.

“CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric will lead coverage during the evening newscast and during a special one-hour program at 10 PM ET. Couric will be joined by CBS News chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer, senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield and CBS News congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes.

CBS will have coverage online before and after the primetime sprogram, with a special edition of the webcast “Washington Unplugged” streaming from 9-10 PM, and Couric anchoring another special webcast beginning at 11 PM.

CBS is also teaming with Google to showcase search trends related to the election, as well as  popular political videos on YouTube.

Led by CBS EVENING NEWS Anchor and Managing Editor Katie Couric, CBS News election coverage will cross all media platforms, featuring reports and analysis from political reporting veterans Chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer, Senior Political Correspondent Jeff Greenfield and CBS News Congressional Correspondent Nancy Cordes.  The CBS News team will collaborate with Google to present unique information that will enhance its analysis of the nation’s attitudes toward the candidates and the issues.

In 2008, CBS News broke new ground with Couric’s election night webcast.  In 2009, CBS News launched WASHINGTON UNPLUGGED, the first regularly scheduled network political webcast.  This year, for the first time, CBS News will work with Google to showcase election search trends, as well as data from YouTube about popular political videos, to provide insights into Americans’ thoughts and interests as the nation votes in this crucial mid-term contest.

CBS News Radio will offer continuous coverage of the election and for the first time radio reports will be featured across its partners including AOL Radio, Radio.com and the CBS Radio iPhone App.  Coverage across all platforms, including CBS News broadcasts, CBS Radio News and CBSNews.com will feature exclusive reports, poll results, and interviews and analysis from CBS’s team of political experts.

CBS News’ election special “Campaign 2010: Election Night” hosted by Katie Couric will kick off Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 10:00 PM, ET.  Immediately following the broadcast, Couric will anchor a live webcast at 11:00 PM, ET that will feature extended analysis from the CBS News political team, interviews and special guests.  Additionally, Couric will provide brief Campaign 2010 updates at the top of each hour throughout the night.

Using the information from Google and YouTube, CBS News will create election segments for CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC, THE EARLY SHOW and CBSNews.com that will provide insight into the unique ways in which voters and campaigns are using the Internet to engage around the election.  CBS News special election night coverage will also be live on the division’s YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/CBSNewsOnline) and access to CBS News’ election night coverage will be available across the YouTube network.

In addition, CBSNews.com will provide live breaking news from across the country and unique analysis on what it all means in stories, blogs and video. From 9:00-10:00 PM, ET, the site will air a special one-hour live WASHINGTON UNPLUGGED webcast featuring breaking developments on the top Election Night races with analysis from CBS News correspondents, political analysts and more.  At 10:00 PM, ET, CBSNews.com will simulcast the CBS News Network Election Night special report, followed by a live webcast with Katie Couric and the CBS News political team continuing their coverage on CBSNews.com and via the site’s live streaming partners.

CBS News Radio continuous coverage will be anchored by CBS National Correspondent Dan Raviv and will feature top name newsmakers from both major political parties, as well as political analysts, including reporters from Politico.com and CBS News Correspondents.  Coverage will follow races coast-to-coast, with up-to-the-minute news and polling, commentary and analysis.  Election coverage will begin at 7:00 PM, ET and run until midnight or later; coverage of election results will begin at 7:00 PM, ET and continue through 1:50 AM, ET or later.  CBS Radio News Correspondents will be situated at campaign headquarters throughout the nation.

In 2008, CBS News won the industry’s prestigious DuPont Award, the Annenberg School’s Walter Cronkite award and critical acclaim for Katie Couric’s iconic interview with vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.   As described in the DuPont award program, “[i]n a political season full of interviews…, Katie Couric’s apt and determined questioning of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin prompted the most revealing remarks and had the greatest impact on the presidential campaign…Couric’s nimble questioning and even tone elicited answers on the issues…these were the interviews heard around the world.”
