Brian Williams and Katie Couric were both in Port-au-Prince for their newscasts tonight, but due to the circumstances on the ground, much of that time they were either on the phone or their substitute anchors — Lester Holt on NBC and Harry Smith on CBS — were doing the talking. Couric appeared live at the beginning and end of the first half hour. ABC News reporters were live via Skype and phone.
At the halfway point of the expanded ABC World News, substitute anchor George Stephanopoulos mentioned Diane Sawyer was still en route to Haiti from Afghanistan and that she arrive tomorrow.
NBC News was able to get Williams, Al Roker, Kerry Sanders and Ann Curry together, live, during the show’s expanded second half hour.
The broadcasts updated their shows for the West Coast.
On ABC, Stephanopoulos interviewed former president Bill Clinton who is the United Nations Special Envoy to Haiti. Clinton also did interviews with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper. Cooper was the first U.S. TV anchor to arrive in Haiti this morning. Clinton will be on FNC’s “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” tonight.
