Dressage Goes To Cable News

By Alex Weprin

Sports are certainly ripe fodder for cable news channels, and even the Olympics have been a hot topic in the last few days across all of the channels. One sport that has been mostly under-covered however are the equestrian sports, such as dressage.

That will change today, as Rafalca competes in the Olympic competition. Rafalca is the dressage horse partly owned by Ann Romney, the wife of presumptive GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

CNN covered the story as a news item, noting that Ms. Romney is in London to watch her horse and its rider Jan Ebeling compete.

On MSNBC’s “Hardball,” yesterday, Chris Matthews mocked the sport, and the fact that Romney was involved in a competition usually reserved for royalty. Of course, in what is surely a coincidence, MSNBC will be televising Rafalca’s performance this afternoon.
