Mac King, a reporter at WNYW in New York City, poked fun this week at some of the more annoying frequently-used reporter phrases. King — who points out “Cronkite and Murrow never had to compete with Candy Crush or Netflix, but I do” — offered a satirical take at some of the “horrible crimes committed against our language every day” on TV.
On King’s list of violations: phrases like “in this exclusive live developing report,” abuse of the words “tragic, tragedy, horrible or heartbreaking,” unkept promises to “stay on this or bring you more details as they emerge,” improper use of irony, tacking “-gate” to the end of words to indicate a scandal, and much more.
