Couric To CBS: Capus Says ‘Today’ Is “Well Positioned To Face The Changes That Will Come In The Coming Months”

By Brian

In an e-mail to everyone at NBC News this morning, president Steve Capus wished Katie Couric all the best “in the next chapter of her career,” and expressed an “ongoing commitment to our success.”

He wrote: “The staff and on-air team at Today have worked incredibly hard to continue the program’s unprecedented, 10-plus year run in first place – and the fruits of their labors have never been more important. The show is in tremendously good shape, and is well positioned to face the changes that will come in the coming months. In fact, the strength of our entire news division will come into play as we face a change at Today, and I know that we will once again prove that when it comes to transitions, no one does it better than NBC News.”

The full message is after the jump…

For those of you watching “Today” this morning, you’ve just heard Katie Couric announce she will be leaving the program, and our network, at the end of May. During her tenure here, so many of us have been fortunate to work with Katie – be it in the early days at “Today,” “Dateline,” or on one of her many award-winning prime time specials. Her contagious energy, commitment to excellence and winning personality have undoubtedly touched every single one of us. It’s obvious why she will be missed. I know you all join me in wishing her the best in the next chapter of her career.

I am sure that you all have questions…some that can be answered now, and others that will have to wait. Katie is with us until the end of May, and we’ll have a more formal chance before then to wish her well. In the meantime, please know that I will keep everyone posted on future announcements, and that I appreciate your ongoing commitment to our success.
