Coast Guard to Captain: ‘Get back on board the ship!’

This afternoon the cable news channels have been playing portions of that testy, chilling conversation between the captain of the Costa Concordia Francesco Schettino and Italian coast guard official Gregorio Maria De Falco. It happened about an hour after Schettino ran his ship into rocks off the island of Giglio Friday night, and abandoned ship. The tragedy has been the lead on American broadcasts all weekend long. Among the missing, a Minnesota couple, Gerald and Barbara Heil. TVSpy has more on that part of the story.

The coast guard official demanded the captain, who was calling from a lifeboat, return to the ship and account for every passenger: “Look Schettino, you may have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad… There are already corpses, Schettino!
