CNN’s Klein Touts “Phenomenal Year”

By Brian

At CNN’s panel at the TCA press tour on Friday, CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein said the network has made progress toward its “three main objectives” in the last year: Gaining momentum at 10pm, gaining viewers in the morning daypart, and launching The Situation Room. Here’s the transcript of his introductory remarks:

Good morning, everyone. I’m so proud to work at that place. I got to tell you. It’s been a phenomenal year for us, obviously. We’ve been focused on substance and delivery context and perspective and depth. We’ve been focused on staying with stories for a long period of time and drawing stories from more different places, including a lot of international coverage. It’s paid off for us in every way that you can think of in terms of the way we feel about ourselves, in terms of the on-air quality, the stuff that you see on television, audience response has been terrific.

A year ago, we set out three main objectives for the coming year, you know, for ’06. The top one was to gain momentum at 10 o’clock because we get such a good strong lead-in from Larry King. The second was to gain share in the morning because the morning day part represents the fastest growing day part in television news; and the third was to refresh our approach to covering politics. In fact, it was a year ago at the TCA that we introduced ‘The Situation Room.’ I’m happy to say that by sticking to the substance mantra, by making news our gimmick, all three of those goals are being attained and we’ve got terrific momentum moving forward.

The stories that we’re going to be talking about today, the shows and initiatives that we’ve got coming up reflect that overall orientation towards substantive coverage…
