CNN’s Arwa Damon to Receive James W. Foley Humanitarian Award

CNN senior international correspondent Arwa Damon will receive the 2017 James W. Foley Humanitarian Award.

Damon is being recognized for both her reporting from conflict zones and for being an advocate for children impacted by war through International Network for Aid Relief and Assistance (INARA), a non-profit she launched in 2015.

James Foley was an American war reporter who was kidnapped and brutally beheaded by ISIS in 2014.

“James was one of us, so this is an incredible – and quite personal – honor,” said Damon. “I’m grateful to Diane and the Foundation for their commitment to continuing the important work James started.”

JWFLF will honor Damon on May 1 at the second annual James W. Foley Freedom Awards dinner in Washington, D.C.

Following the murder of her son, Diane Foley launched a foundation to honor his legacy.  The foundation advocates for hostage policy research, the protection of independent conflict journalists, and student education.

The Foley family has been critical of the U.S. government in recent years. James’ brother Michael Foley told Yahoo News’ Katie Couric in a 2014 interview that the U.S. could’ve done more on behalf of his late brother.
