CNN Radio Looking Beyond the Airwaves for Listeners

By Chris Ariens

CNN Radio has hired several new staffers as the division looks for new listeners on new platforms.

Two new correspondents have signed on, including Libby Lewis in DC and John Sepulvado in Atlanta. Chip Grabow, who has over 20 years of radio experience mostly with NPR, takes on a new role as senior editor in Atlanta while Susanna Capelouto, who joins from Georgia Public Broadcasting, will work with correspondents around the world.

“Our goal is to drive CNN’s audio services onto platforms and devices that have not been our traditional businesses,” says Victor Kong, vice president of CNN News Services.

Kong, who has a digital media background having worked at MySpace, joined CNN Radio last February. Just before his arrival, the radio division cut 11 Atlanta-based staffers in a reorganization.

Kong says he is looking at “creating a more personal and intimate product… which touches the heart but also stimulates the brain with analysis and discussion.”

CNN Radio content can still be heard the old fashioned way: on affiliate stations, but is increasingly available on-line and via wireless services.
