CNN Adds Weather, Travel to Lower Thirds

By Merrill Knox

If you’re watching CNN today, you may have noticed a new addition to the lower thirds: a cycle of current weather conditions in cities around the country. The weather updates have an animated weather map and real-time information on airport delays.

It’s not a permanent addition, a CNN spokesperson tells TVNewser. The graphics are part of the channel’s coverage of a severe weather front threatening holiday travel this week: a winter storm is causing sleet and freezing rain across parts of the South and moving toward the Northeast, slated to arrive on Wednesday, one of the busiest travel days of the year. The network has used similar graphics in the past to cover severe weather.

The Weather Channel has dubbed the storm “Winter Storm Boreas.” It has caused at least nine deaths from California to Texas.
