As previously reported, FNC’s Brit Hume was placed under CIA surveillance when he worked as a researcher for Jack Anderson in 1972.
Tuesday on Special Report, correspondent James Rosen relayed newly declassified details about CIA operations, including the fact that Hume had been wiretapped:
| ROSEN: [Then CIA director William Colby] said ‘we put a tap on Jack Anderson and three of the associates.’ President Ford asked Colby, ‘who ordered it?’ Colby said his predecessor as CIA director, Richard Helms. ‘Whether on his own or not, I don’t know, this was not illegal,’ Colby said, ‘but perhaps outside our jurisdiction.’ Were you aware that you were wiretapped or was it just physical surveillance? HUME: I don’t recall knowing that — I knew we had been surveilled. I will say this, the assertion that it wasn’t illegal seems dubious in light of the fact that the national security act of 1947 prescribed the CIA from any domestic operations. |
