Chris Wragge calls it his “Super Bowl” opportunity.
Wragge, who anchors 5pm and 11pm local newscasts for WCBS-TV, also anchors CBS’s Saturday Early Show. It’s a six-day workweek that, this week, is supplemented as he fills in for Harry Smith on the weekday Early Show.
“With people losing jobs left and right,” Wragge tells Richard Huff of the New York Daily News, “I’m thrilled to have one job, and over the moon to have two.”
He goes to sleep around 12:15am, after his WCBS duties, waking at 4am for The Early Show. Wragge naps for about two and a half hours midday before heading back to WCBS. He’ll get even less sleep starting tomorrow, when CBS’s NCAA tournament coverage will cause WCBS’s 11pm newscast to start late.
CBS News and CBS Sports President Sean McManus tells Huff, “I have no doubt [Wragge] can handle it,” but that he “wouldn’t have him do it two weeks in a row.”
Wragge says the schedule is fine in the absence of timetable-wracking breaking news. “I was thinking if ever there was a week where I don’t need a plane landing in the Hudson, this is it.”
