Chris Matthews: ‘I would be one of the stars of the Democratic Party.’

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews says he would have been “one of the stars of the Democratic Party” if he’d run and won a Pennsylvania Senate seat.

Four years ago Matthews seriously considered running. He met with Pennsylvania democrats and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette even commissioned a poll on a possible Chris Matthews-Arlen Specter race. Matthews now tells Philadelphia Style magazine, he’d be a BFD if he was in the Senate right now and not hosting an MSNBC show every night. “I know this: If I had run and won and beaten [Sen. Pat] Toomey, I would be one of the Democrats people talk about today. I’m not dreaming here. I would be one of the stars of the Democratic Party.”

Meanwhile, The Hill‘s Alexandra Jaffe was watching MSNBC’s post-debate coverage last night, and caught this, Matthews talking about the critics of the President:

I think they hate Obama. They want him out of the White House more than they want to destroy Al Qaeda. Their No. 1 enemy in the world right now, on the right, is their hatred, hatred for Obama. And we can go into that about the white working class in the South and looking at these numbers we’re getting the last couple days about racial hatred in many cases … this isn’t about being a better president, they want to get rid of this president.
