China’s Xinhua to Offer 24-Hour English-Language News Channel

Xinhua, the official press agency of the Chinese government, is launching a global, 24-Hour news channel that will broadcast in English called CNC World. (CNC stands for “China Xinhua News Network Corporation.) From the BBC:

Officials said CNC World would present “an international vision with a China perspective”.

The launch is being seen as an attempt by China to develop its influence abroad and counter foreign media views.

Execs say CNC World will start in Hong Kong but expand to 50 million worldwide viewers within a year’s time. Wu Jincai, controller of CNC World, underscored to the BBC, “We are a news channel, not a propaganda station.”

The venture is reminiscent of RT — also known as Russia Today — which launched in 2005. This past April, TVNewser sat down with the Editor-in-Chief of RT, who told us the goal of that network is “to bring the word about Russia to the world and to make the world more familiar with what this country is all about.”

In case you missed it: TVNewser went international this spring with a great inside look at Shanghai’s largest TV news studio.
