Charlie Gibson Retires, Diane Sawyer to ‘World News’: What Happens at GMA?

By Chris Ariens

With today’s stunner that Charlie Gibson is retiring from ABC News and that Diane Sawyer will take over anchoring “World News”, a vacancy will be created at the nation’s #2 morning broadcast, “Good Morning America.”

Sawyer has helmed the show since 1999 co-anchoring with Gibson until he left to anchor “World News” in 2006. Sawyer’s role on GMA was supposed to be temporary, but she marked 10 years with the broadcast earlier this year.

Sources inside ABC News tell TVNewser the network feels they have a strong morning team in Robin Roberts, Chris Cuomo and Sam Champion, so don’t look for any major changes before the January transition at “World News.”
