Chaggaris Promoted at CBS

Steve Chaggaris, formerly Deputy Political Director for CBS News, has been bumped up to Director, Political Coverage today. Chaggaris will be filling the position vacated by Molly Levinson last month.

Chaggaris served as associate producer, off-air reporter, political producer and deputy political director during his eight years with CBS.

CBS also announced that Marc Ambinder has been named Chief Political Consultant. Ambinder is associate editor of The Atlantic and contributing editor to the National Journal. He will continue in both those roles.

CBS News Veteran Steve Chaggaris is Promoted to Director, Political Coverage

Marc Ambinder has been named Chief Political Consultant, CBS News, it was announced by Paul Friedman, Senior Vice President, News Coverage, CBS News. The appointment is effective immediately. Ambinder will contribute to all CBS News broadcasts and outlets, as well as to the editorial shape and scope of CBS News’ political coverage throughout Campaign ’08.

Steve Chaggaris, who has been Deputy Political Director for CBS News, has been promoted to Director, Political Coverage, CBS News, where he will continue to be a critical part of the Network’s planning and coverage of Campaign ’08.

Ambinder is currently an associate editor at The Atlantic and the author of its must-read insider’s blog on the 2008 presidential race. Ambinder also is a contributing editor to National Journal. He will continue in those roles.

Earlier in his career, Ambinder was an editor of The Hotline, the daily political newsletter (2005-07). He was named one of the 10 “Rising Stars” of Washington journalism by Washingtonian Magazine. He covered national politics for ABC News and co-founded “The Note,” the network’s widely-read daily political report (2001-05).

Ambinder was graduated from Harvard University in 2001 with a degree in history. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Chaggaris has contributed to CBS News’ political coverage for more than eight years, initially as an associate producer (1999-2001), and then as a Capitol Hill off-air reporter (2001-03), Campaign ’04 off-air reporter covering the campaign of Sen. John Kerry (2003-04), political producer (2005-06) and, finally, as Deputy Political Director since January 2007.
