CBS Sends Scott Pelley, Erica Hill to Africa

By Alex Weprin

While most of the U.S.-based news organizations to place their focus on the economy, CBS News is ensuring that time is being spent covering a crisis that is resulting unspeakable death and tragedy.

This evening Scott Pelley will anchor the “CBS Evening News” from East Africa, where he will report on the humanitarian disaster. In addition, CBS “Early Show” co-anchor Erica Hill is in Kenya, where she will report for that program from a  refugee camp.

As we noted last week, U.S. TV news organizations are finally deploying domestic correspondents to the scene, though Pelley will be the most high-profile anchor to report from Africa since the crisis began. ABC was the first American outlet to send one of its high-profile reporters to the region in early July with David Muir. NBC and CNN also had correspondents reporting from Africa early that month, albeit ones slightly less familiar to U.S. audiences.
