CBS’ John Dickerson on Donald Trump and Free Media: ‘Air Time Is Not a Universal Good’

By Mark Joyella

Face the Nation host John Dickerson says Donald Trump‘s decision to largely avoid advertising in favor of a massive free media campaign has “hurt him just as much as it helped him.”

In an interview with Politico, Dickerson says Trump’s ability to dominate the news cycle has come with a huge downside:

“Air time is not a universal good…It did hurt his numbers. Sixty percent of the country doesn’t think he’s fit for the job…He’s got terrible numbers that are getting worse with certain groups of the country. If everybody weren’t so in the middle of it, [we’d] say, ‘Boy, the press really set out to ruin this guy by ruining his standing with younger voters, voters of color, college-educated women. Why were they so mean to him by giving him all this air time?’”
