CBS Announces Convention Plans

CBS News announced its plans for the 2008 Democratic and Republican Conventions today. The usual political broadcast team of Katie Couric leading coverage, with Bob Schieffer and Jeff Greenfield contributing, continues at the conventions.

Some notes:

• CBS will air three hours of prime time programming, Tuesday-Thursday at 10pm, at each convention.

• Harry Smith anchors The Early Show from Denver and Maggie Rodriguez from St. Paul.

• Schieffer anchors Face the Nation from each convention site on the Sunday before each begins.

Katie Couric will lead CBS News’ coverage of the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions and will be joined by Chief Washington Correspondent and FACE THE NATION Anchor Bob Schieffer and Senior Political Correspondent Jeff Greenfield at both. The Democratic Convention will take place Aug. 25-28 at the Pepsi Center and INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium (on the last night only) in Denver. The Republican Convention will be held Sept. 1-4 at Xcel Center in St. Paul.

Based on the preliminary schedules for the conventions, CBS News plans three hours of live coverage in prime time, anchored by Couric, for each convention, including the acceptance speeches: Tuesday, Aug. 26, through Thursday, Aug. 28 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT each night) from each site in Denver and Tuesday, Sept. 2, through Thursday, Sept. 4 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT each night) from St. Paul.

The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC, THE EARLY SHOW and FACE THE NATION will also originate live from each convention site.

Following is an overview of CBS News’ planned convention coverage:

• The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC will be anchored live by Couric from each convention site Monday through Thursday (6:30-7:00 PM, ET/PT).

• THE EARLY SHOW’s Harry Smith will anchor the broadcast’s coverage from Denver and Maggie Rodriguez will anchor from St. Paul Monday through Thursday (7:00-9:00 AM, ET/PT).

• FACE THE NATION WITH BOB SCHIEFFER will originate from the convention sites the day before each one begins: from Denver on Sunday, Aug. 24 and from St. Paul on Sunday, Aug. 31 (10:30-11:00 AM, ET). Guests will be announced closer to broadcast dates.

• CBS Radio News’s coverage will include live, one-hour wrap-up broadcasts each night of the conventions, nightly updates four times per hour, live unanchored feeds of all major events, podcasts of all major speeches, other reports and features for CBS Radio News affiliates’ websites and other special features. CBS News/Radio coverage will be led by CBS News Correspondents Dan Raviv, Howard Arenstein, Peter Maer, Mark Knoller, Barry Bagnato, Steve Futterman and Web reporter Scott Wycoff. They will be joined by CBS Radio News political consultants Rutgers political science professor Gerald Pomper and Dotty Lynch.

• CBSNews.com’s team of political reporters, led by Senior Political Editor Vaughn Ververs, will report the breaking news and inside stories in text and Web-exclusive video, and will blog from both conventions. The Web site will also provide live gavel-to-gavel streaming video coverage of all events, and an on-line and on-demand video archive of all convention speeches, as well as extended video interviews and CBS News correspondent reports that can be watched anytime.
