Campaign To Dump Trump As Indy Pace Car Driver

By Cam Martin

If racing fan Chris Hughes has his way, professional lightning rod Donald Trump will be dropped as the pace car driver for the upcoming Indianapolis 500.

“Driving the pace car should not be used as a sound board for some terrible businessman to spew his political aspirations,” Chris Hughes told the Indianapolis Star. “Especially with this being the 100th anniversary.”

Trump was named driver of the pace car in early April, just before he began a widespread campaign to associate himself with the brilliance of birtherism. Given the embarrassment of that charade, some race car fans think the Indianapolis Motor Speedway should select someone different. A Facebook page called “We Don’t Want Donald Trump to Drive the Indy 500 Pace Car” has already 15,000 likes. And while officials at IMS say they’re aware of the Facebook campaign, don’t look for Trump to be replaced. As Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana said Tuesday through his spokesman: “whatever sells tickets.”
