Cal Perry Named NBC News Global Editor of Digital Content

By A.J. Katz

MSNBC’s Cal Perry will be moving to London to begin a new role as global editor of digital content for NBC News. In this brand new role, Perry will build a team of contributing digital journalists, video producers and more from across the globe that will focus on stories ranging from global politics and breaking news to off-beat local features.

Perry will report to Catherine Kim, executive editor of NBC News Digital, and he will work with both digital and TV at NBC News, as well as with its new partner, Euronews.

Perry spent about a year and a half as senior editor of video and digital content for MSNBC. Before that, he had a brief stint as a correspondent for Al Jazeera America and was an international correspondent for CNN from 2005 – 2010, primarily reporting from the Middle East.

Nick Ascheim, svp of digital for NBC News Group, sent the following memo to staff:

All

An important component of our journey toward digital video dominance is expanding our presence globally so that we can better source stories and compelling video from around the world. To that end, we are going to build a roster of contributing journalists from around the world that will focus on a range of stories, from hard news and global politics to off-beat local features. Drawing on the work from this community, we will strengthen our global coverage and enhance the work we are doing abroad. (Of course our international teams are already doing great work as evidenced by Monday’s nod from SPJ Sigma Delta Chi Awards for our reporting on Brussels, the majority of which came from the amazing team in the London bureau).

To bring this idea to life, I’ve asked Cal Perry to take on the newly created role of Global Editor Digital Content, NBC News. Reporting to Catherine Kim and working in partnership with our newsroom leadership, Cal will draw on his vast international experience to establish and manage this community of journalists. He will assemble a network that will produce content for all our platforms – digital and linear — and will also help our new partner, Euronews. Cal will be based in our London Bureau and start his new role immediately.

Please join me in congratulating Cal and stay tuned for more details on this opportunity as it develops over the coming months.

Nick
