Cablers See Afternoon Ratings Boost While Covering Amanda Knox Verdict

The cable news channels saw a substantial boost in viewership Monday afternoon as Amanda Knox learned that she was acquitted, and could return to the U.S.

From 3-6 PM ET, when the networks were focused on Knox, Fox News Channel led the way in total viewers, while CNN was on top on the key adults 25-54 demo.

Fox News averaged 1.849 million total viewers, including 355,000 demo viewers. CNN also cracked the million-viewer mark averaging 1.334 million total viewers, including 413,000 demo viewers. HLN, which has made covering trials a focus of its content strategy, drew 695,000 total viewers including 230,000 demo viewers.MSNBC drew 568,000 total viewers, including 114,000 demo viewers.

  • Last night also marked the debut of Erin Burnett’s “OutFront” on CNN. The program drew 535,000 total viewers, including 215,000 demo viewers. That is an improvement over “John King USA” from the previous week, though it is only one data point, and it was a big news day due to the Knox verdict.
