The holidays took their toll on the cable channels last week (December 31-January 6), with only ESPN and its huge “Monday Night Football” game, seeing anything resembling a significant ratings bump.
Fox News Channel was the top cable news network for the week, though it only barely stayed in the top 10 of all ad-supported cable channels, placing ninth in primetime and eighth in total day. FNC averaged 1.47 million viewers in primetime and 1.02 million viewers in total day. MSNBC was 25th in primetime and 27th in total day, averaging 767,000 and 495,000 viewers, respectively. CNN placed 31st in primetime and 29th in total day, averaging 630,000 and 489,000 viewers, respectively.
Current TV saw a ratings jump after its sale to Al Jazeera, improving nearly 50% in total day, and even topping Fox Business Network in primetime. Current still placed 89th in primetime and 92nd in total day, and drew a relatively meager 53,000 and 33,000 viewers, respectively.
For the business networks: CNBC placed 53rd in primetime and 50th in total day, averaging 221,000 and 190,000 viewers, respectively. FBN placed 91st in primetime and 88th in total day, averaging 44,000 and 45,000 viewers, respectively. Bloomberg TV hasn’t been rated by Nielsen since it launched in 1994.
