Cable Network Ranker: June and Q2 2012

By Alex Weprin

The second quarter of 2012 was not the most memorable news-wise, with political news continuing to dribble out, and limited breaking news events compared to the last few years. The cable news ratings reflected that.

As usual, Fox News Channel was the top cable news outlet, placing 5th in primetime among all ad-supported cable networks with 1.79 million viewers in primetime. FNC placed 6th in total day with 1.05 million.

MSNBC placed 27th in primetime and 32nd in total day with 689,000 and 394,000 viewers, respectively. CNN placed 37th in primetime and 35th in total day with 446,000 and 319,000 viewers, respectively.

HLN placed 40th in primetime and 41st in total day with 348,000 and 242,000 viewers, respectively. Current TV continues to struggle ratings-wise, placing last among all ad-supported cable nets in primetime with 30,000 viewers, and 94th in total day with 25,000.

As for the business networks, CNBC was 53rd in primetime with 208,000 viewers and 56th in total day with 133,000, though the net was bolstered somewhat by playoff NHL games.  Fox Business Network placed 88th in primetime and 85th in total day with 54,000 and 55,000 viewers, respectively. Bloomberg TV hasn’t been rated since launching in 1994.
