Just before 9amET the news broke that Elizabeth Taylor had died. “Good Morning America” and “The Early Show” had signed off, with “Today” not yet entering its third hour.

ABC’s Robin Roberts and David Muir, filling in on GMA, broke in at 9:04amET for a special report. (WABC in New York broke theĀ  news at the end of the local news update, with information from ABC network news, we’re told). “Today” reported the story during the newsblock at 9:03, continued with other news, then anchors Matt Lauer, Ann Curry, Natalie Morales and Al Roker discussed the story, before airing a pre-produced obituary story about Taylor. CBS News’ Erica Hill anchored a special report on CBS at 9:10am.
