A mass shooting incident that may have left a dozen people killed is dominating news coverage this afternoon, with the broadcast networks all carrying special reports, and cable news going wall-to-wall with dramatic live pictures.
NBC News broke in at 2:42 p.m. ET with a special report anchored by Lester Holt. ABC News’ live coverage was anchored by George Stephanopoulos, and CBS News broke in at 2:44 p.m. ET with a special report anchored by Scott Pelley.
CNN first reported the story at 2:29 p.m. ET, with Brooke Baldwin. Fox News pre-empted its 2 p.m. program to provide live breaking news coverage with Shepard Smith from the Fox News Deck. MSNBC reported the mass shooting at 2:32 p.m. ET with Thomas Roberts–breaking news anchor Brian Williams was not part of the network’s coverage, as he’s at home, recovering from back surgery.
The shooting, in San Bernardino, Calif., involves reports of up to three gunmen–though initial reports are notoriously unreliable in incidents like these. Live pictures carried on cable showed multiple people streaming out of a building, described as Inland Regional Services, which provides services to people with developmental disabilities. Emergency crews treated people who appeared to be injured.
CNBC, Fox Business Network and CBSN have also been providing continuous live coverage of the mass shooting.
The White House reports President Obama has been briefed on San Bernardino, and his first comments may go to CBS’ Norah O’Donnell, who is about to meet with the President for a previously scheduled interview.
