Boxing Announcer Nick Charles Calls His Final Fight

By Marcus Vanderberg

Boxing announcer Nick Charles called his final broadcast Saturday for HBO, working alongside Bob Papa in the Mikey Garcia vs. Matt Remillard fight on Boxing After Dark.

Charles, 64, is battling Stage 4 bladder cancer and reportedly only has weeks to live. Thanks to Joe Posnanski’s story in Sports Illustrated on Charles, it opened the door for one last opportunity to call a fight.

HBO boxing executive producer Rick Bernstein read the story about Charles and told HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg he was going to use him on the BAD card.

“Why am I doing this tonight? To inspire others to do what you love,” Charles said during the telecast.

A touching moment to say the least.
