Boston.com Goes Paid But Keeps Sports Free

By Noah Davis

The Boston Globe will split its website into Boston.com (free) and BostonGlobe.com (paid, or free with a subscription to the paper).

According to a story about the plans, “Boston.com’s audience will have limited access to journalism that appears in the newspaper, but will have wide-ranging access to content the Globe’s newsroom produces throughout the day for the website.”

They will also be able to read all the sports.

Boston.com sports producer tweets, “The good news about all of this two websites business is that all of sports will be free. Sports fans have nothing to worry about.”

It sounds like executives at the Globe (so the New York Times Co.) are hedging their bets with the two sites, which means the plan isn’t going to work. They need to pick one, either totally free or paid. Going both ways isn’t going to work. Trust us.
