By Alex Weprin

Former New York (baseball) Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson has died at age 86. Thomson was at the center of one of the most famous calls in baseball history, “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” when he hit the game winning home run to send the Giants to the 1951 World Series.

Broadcaster Russ Hodges call of “The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!” continues to live in baseball–and broadcasting–lore.
