Bob Woodruff’s Family Matters

By Chris Ariens

ABC’s Bob Woodruff wife Lee, and their kids are featured in the debut issue of Prestige New York.

It’s another Saturday afternoon at the Woodruff house.
Bob and Lee Woodruff’s 17-year-old son, Mack, is heading to his indoor soccer match, and Cathryn, the Woodruffs’ 14-year-old daughter, has returned from dance class. The Woodruffs’ eight-year-old twins, Claire and Nora, have just been dropped off at a birthday party. It’s an idyllic scene, but one that has gravity as well. Bob Woodruff will be the first to tell you how lucky he is to be alive. The ABC News reporter spent more than five weeks in a medically-induced coma after being seriously injured by a roadside bomb while working in Iraq in January 2006, then underwent more surgeries than he cares to remember. “I came very close to the line and somehow bounced back away from it instead of continuing through it, so I know this is just a free time now,” says Woodruff. “I got my kids and my wife back.”

The feature focuses on the work of the the Bob Woodruff Family Foundation. Once part of the Brain Injury Association of America, the foundation went independent in January 2008 and by the end of last year had given more than $2.5 million to about 35 grassroots organizations that help veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Says Woodruff, “We want to help [injured soldiers] find a job and resume their life as opposed to disappearing. We don’t want to give them fish, we want to teach them how to fish.”
