Bob Schieffer: “Nobody Knows Where Journalism Is Going”

Bob Schieffer’s hometown newspaper, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports on his visit this week to Texas Christian University’s Schieffer School of Journalism to help unveil a “convergence laboratory.”

The 2,350 square foot facility, to be built within about a year, is intended to help students learn how to be multi-platform journalists.

“Nobody knows where journalism is going,” Schieffer tells reporter Gene Trainor. “Nobody knows whether our students here at TCU will be working for newspapers, web sites, or television stations. So we’re going to make sure that everybody who works here is familiar with all the various platforms in journalism.”

Schieffer says he’s optimistic about the future of journalism because he believes a free press is essential to Democracy. And, despite changing technology, he also believes in having students learn the basics.

“For all the technology, [journalism] still comes down to the individual reporter….who has the courage and the expertise and the knowledge, who goes to wherever the story is, gets the story and then tells it…”
